Explore Phu Quoc: Adventures in the Pearl Island
Nestled in the Gulf of Thailand, approximately 400 kilometers west of Ho Chi Minh City, Phú Quốc Archipelago captivates both domestic and international tourists with its diverse range of tourism activities and abundant marine and island resources; its ecosystem boasts a rich variety of both terrestrial and marine life.
The Phú Quốc archipelago comprises 22 large and small islands, covering a total area of approximately 589.23 square kilometers. Phú Quốc Island, the largest, is divided into the northern and southern parts, with Dương Đông town situated at its center.
1. Best Time to Visit Phú Quốc
The ideal time to visit the Pearl Island is from November to April of the following year. This is the dry season in the South, characterized by little rain, calm seas, gentle waves, and warm sunshine, making it perfect for outdoor activities. This season is ideal for relaxation and resort vacations, but less suitable for backpacking or adventurous trips.
From May to October is the rainy season, with occasional storms. However, Phú Quốc still attracts a large number of visitors during this period, coinciding with the summer holidays. If visiting Phú Quốc during this season, it’s advisable to go around the end of April when the crowds are smaller, the weather is still pleasant, and prices are not as high as during peak season. October is also a transitional month with less rainfall.
2. How to Getting There
Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, and Vietjet Air offer direct flights to Phú Quốc from Hanoi, Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa, Vinh, Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Da Lat, and Buon Ma Thuột. With a bit of luck, you can find roundtrip tickets for under one million VND. Phú Quốc Airport is approximately a 15-minute drive from the island’s center. Some high-end hotels and resorts offer complimentary airport transfers. You should inquire about this service when booking your accommodation in Phú Quốc.
- By Airplane
In addition to direct flights, travelers have more options when traveling from Ho Chi Minh City to Phú Quốc, such as motorbikes, cars, buses, speedboats, or ferries. For first-time visitors to Phú Quốc, it is recommended to take a speedboat to avoid seasickness. There are two routes to Phú Quốc: the journey from Rạch Giá is about 120 km and takes 2 hours and 30 minutes, while the journey from Hà Tiên is about 50 km and takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. It is recommended to depart from Hà Tiên to shorten the travel time by sea, and the ticket price is also cheaper. You should call the pier in advance to purchase tickets and ensure your schedule is on track.
- By Bus
If you are driving yourself, it is advisable to travel at night to catch the ferry at around 4 AM and experience the sunrise at sea. The journey takes a little over 6 hours from Ho Chi Minh City to the ferry pier in Hà Tiên. You should prepare food, drinks, blankets, pillows… and it is best to have two people take turns driving to ensure a safe and continuous night journey. If traveling by bus, you can depart from the center of Ho Chi Minh City. There are many high-quality buses to Hà Tiên, with ticket prices ranging from 150,000 VND to 230,000 VND per person, depending on the bus company. Some high-quality bus companies you can consider include Phương Trang, Mai Linh, and Kumho.
- Around Phu Quoc
The most common mode of transportation on Phú Quốc Island is taxi and motorbike. Typically, taxi companies and rental services offer half-day or full-day tours of the southern and northern islands for 500,000 – 700,000 VND. Drivers will take guests to the most popular attractions. Alternatively, you can rent a motorbike for 100,000 – 150,000 VND per day, excluding fuel. Guests need to leave their ID card or citizen identification card as a deposit. Before driving, you should carefully check the brakes, turn signals, and lights. There are buses operating on most routes, from the airport to Dương Đông town and An Thới port, with fares ranging from 10,000 to 40,000 VND. However, tourist attractions far from the main roads are inconvenient to reach by bus.
Accommodation
Phú Quốc offers a diverse range of accommodations, from budget-friendly guesthouses to world-class resorts. For those looking to save money, homestays are a great option. If you’re traveling with a family or a group, hotels in Dương Đông town would be the most convenient choice as they offer easy access to attractions and shopping areas.
Five-star hotels such as Saigon Phu Quoc Resort and Eden Resort typically have room rates exceeding VND 1,500,000 per night. Three to four-star hotels range from VND 1,000,000 to 1,500,000. Two-star hotels like Gold Hotel, Lavita Hotel, Sea Star Resort, and Kim Hoa are generally priced between VND 600,000 and 800,000.
Unlike Nha Trang where beaches are easily accessible from major roads, in Phú Quốc, you often need to travel farther to reach the beach. Therefore, if you prefer a peaceful and relaxing stay, consider staying at a resort, villa, or bungalow near the beach. You can choose from a variety of accommodations with prices ranging from VND 1,800,000 to 7,000,000 per night. In the northern part of the island, there are Vinpearl Phú Quốc Resort, Nam Nghi Coral Peninsula Phú Quốc, and Fusion Resort Phu Quoc. On the eastern side of the island, Rocks Beach Boutique Phu Quoc, located in Hàm Ninh commune and opened in early 2022, has been dubbed the “mini Maldives”. Every 15th day of the first lunar month, large festivals are held here.
- Mũi Dinh Cậu
Mũi Dinh Cậu is the best spot to admire the sunset, with its uniquely shaped rocky cliffs resembling mountains rising from the sea. The sunset at Mũi Dinh Cậu is most beautiful from May to September, when the entire sky and sea merge into a breathtakingly serene blue hue.
